SUMMARY:Attention on Retention: New approaches to an age-old problem
DESCRIPTION:This FREE webinar will discuss issues around retention of students in HE. As the Government considers whether future university compacts should penalise universities for high attrition rates\, we ask\, what do student retention stats really mean\, and what are the best policy approaches to help students? \nThis will be a live webinar featuring insights from a panel of HE experts including: \n\nProfessor Andrew Norton\, Monash University\nProfessor Mollie Dollinger\, Curtin University\n\n  \nThe webinar will be facilitated by Stephen Matchett and Tim Winkler. Attendees will be able to join the conversation\, submitting questions for consideration by facilitators and panel via the Q&A button.

SUMMARY:Changing Tracks: critical ingredients for better tertiary pathways.
DESCRIPTION:My eQuals was the result of transnational sector collaboration between all 47 Australian and New Zealand universities that delivered the official tertiary credentials platform. It was driven by a desire to improve student mobility\, ensure credential integrity\, and deliver institutional efficiencies. This has now extended to 126 education providers\, including TAFE. \nThese drivers remain relevant\, but there is now even more demand for mobility – in particular\, the need for omnidirectional pathways between VET and HE – as well as credential security\, with UNESCO recently highlighting that the impact of fake degrees has increased from an estimated $1 billion in 2015 to $22 billion in 2022 (including AI-generated deep fake credentials). \nJoin a discussion of the opportunities for the sector to lead the way to establishing these pathways and ensuring credential integrity under the collaborative ethos of My eQuals.

SUMMARY:Career mentoring has changed. Has your program?
DESCRIPTION:If improving career mentoring outcomes and scaling industry engagement is part of your 2026 goals\, this is a conversation you should be part of. Many universities invest heavily in mentoring programs\, but still struggle to scale them\, maintain engagement\, or measure their impact. In this short session\, we’ll break down why most career mentoring programs struggle\, and what leading universities are doing differently.

SUMMARY:Universities Without Walls Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Higher Education Leaders will consider what opportunities there are to strengthen higher education through the concept of a ‘University Without Walls’ – built around the needs of community\, not just campus. \nKey topics\n\nNew models of student-centric engagement – adjusting curriculum\, delivery and assessment to suit student needs and preferences\, not institutional imperatives.\nIs the solo-occupier campus a luxury most unis can’t afford – A re-think of campuses as shared spaces for multiple institutions\, reducing operational costs\, rather than owned and occupied by a single university.\nListening and responding to rebuild social licence – demonstrating deep engagement with community and a willingness to change in response.\nResponsible science – can we grow research outputs through low-cost high-value collaborations while also protecting data and national interests? Is borderless growth a viable strategy with these constraints?\n\nLessons from piloting a new operational model in real time\nThis is a symposium unlike most others. \nWe will start with a session featuring the extraordinary stories of two Ukrainian academics\, Professor Yana Sychikova and Professor Igor Lyman\, whose lives were turned upside down when Russia invaded their home town of Berdyansk in 2022. \nProfessor Sychikova and Lyman are coming to Australia for this event\, providing a rare opportunity to develop insights from their experience first hand. They will tell the story not just of escape and ongoing danger from aerial bombardment\, but also the success story of re-establishing their university from temporary quarters behind Ukrainian lines\, establishing a University Without Walls which takes education and research to their community in person and also online. \nStudents at Berdyansk State Pedagogical University include people studying illegally in occupied territories\, soldiers on the front line\, and refugees from the Russian invasion scattered to safe havens across the world. With few resources\, the university has managed to thrive\, with insights for Australian institutions: \n\nIncreasing research output through collaboration and embedding staff and students in research facilities around the world\nIntroducing new modes of online\, hybrid and in person delivery\, including intensive classes in different cities in Ukraine and extended completion windows for assessment to accommodate student needs\nFast-tracking new curriculum that reflects national and community priorities.\n\nProfessor Sychikova and Lyman will discuss insights from studying 40 displaced universities across Australia\, creating provocations for a host of Australian education leaders to respond to during the symposium.
