ANU historian Frank Bongiorno is in-coming president of the Council for the humanities, arts and social sciences.

Denis Fougerouse (Curtin U) wins the Mineralogical Society of America’s ‘2024 award for young researchers.

The Mark Hughes Foundation, for brain cancer research, announces grants to; * ChenChen Jiang, Hubert Hondermarck, James Lynam, Michael Fay and Sam Faulkner (Uni Newcastle): targeted therapy for glioblastoma * Eng-Siew Koh, Andrew Scott, Martin Ebert, Mike Fay, Alisha Moore: radio therapy treatment planning for glioblastoma patients (Cooperative Trials Group for Neuro-Oncology, Uni Sydney) * Tamara Ownsworth, Mark Pinkham, Jodie Nixon, Mike Fay (Griffith U): emotional support skills * Oun Al-iedani, Saadallah Ramadan, Mike Fay, Stefano Casagranda, Peter Lau​​​​​​​ (University of Newcastle): distinguish grade four gliomas from radiation-induced * Susan Hua, Matt Dun, Ryan Duchatel, Evie Jackson and Lauren Arms (Uni Newcastle): improving drug delivery in pontine glioma * Mike Fay, Paul Tooney and Christopher Fox (Uni SA): hyperthermia treatment of glioblastoma.

The NSW Scientist of the Year is Trevor McDougall (UNSW). Category winners are;

* Anthony Murphy (CSIRO) -Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Chemistry or Physics * Shinichi Nakagawa (UNSW) – Biological Sciences * Catherine Sherrington (Uni Sydney) – Medical Biological Sciences * Jie Lu (UTS) – Engineering, ICT * Deborah Burnett (Garvan IMR) – ECR, Biological Sciences * Chang Xu (Uni Sydney) – ECR, Physical Sciences * Michael Biercuk (Uni Sydney) – Innovation * Jodi Rowley (Australian Museum and UNSW) – Innovation, public Sector Science, Annie-Louise Martin (PLC Sydney) – STEM teaching.

Vaccine researcher Helen Marshall (Uni Adelaide) is South Australia’s scientist of the year.

There are three appointments to the Commonwealth’s National Cultural Heritage Committee, Geraldine Mate (Queensland Museum), Zoe Rimmer (Uni Tasmania) and Stephen Gilchrist (UWA).  

Shannyn Palmer wins the Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Australian History for, Unmaking Angas Downs: myth and history on a central Australian pastoral station (Melbourne University Publishing). Dr Palmer (PhD ANU) is a “community-engaged practitioner, researcher and writer.”

Misha Schubert will leave Science and Technology Australia, to head up a new superannuation lobby group the Super Members Council of Australia.
