Appointments and Achievements (November 20)

Jas Chambers is in-coming president of Science and Technology Australia. She is present VP and will move up in 12 months. Renae Ryan is a new board member and Kathy Nicholson is reappointed.

Rosemary Huxtable will lead development of the Commonwealth’s National Health and Medical Research Strategy. Apparently the need appeared in the review of aligning the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Medical Research Future Fund. Ms Huxtable is a former secretary of the Department of Finance. She was appointed in June to review the Foreign Arrangement’s Scheme which oversights government and public university overseas agreements to ensure consistency with foreign policy.

Tony Kenna (QUT) is in-coming president of the Australian Society for Medical Research.

Fiona Notley becomes COO at RMIT. She moves from Curtin U.

Brett Paull is the Tasmanian Premier’s STEM researcher of the year. Chen Zhao (Uni Tasmania) is ECR. Southern Ocean Subsea wins the innovation award and Ben Arthur (CSIRO) is 2024 communicator.

Michelle Perugini joins Uni South Australia as head of commercialisation. The role will continue post-merger.

Research Australia announces its 2024 awards (despite the all-encompassing title they are medicine-specific). * Clyde Campbell (Shake It Up Foundation (Parkinson’s Disease) wins the “flagship” Peter Willis Medal.  Other awards go to *Mustafa Atee (Hammond Care) for ECR discovery * Paul and Sue Taylor, philanthropy * Jane Tiller (Monash U) advocacy * QUT Centre for Microbiome Research (transformative research) * Digital/Data innovation, RMIT and Telstra Health * Christobel Saunders (Uni Melbourne), health services research * GSK research award, Matthew Kiernan (Neuroscience Research Alliance)

Robyn Ward is to be DVC Research at Monash U, from March. She will move from Uni Sydney, where she is both PVC and Executive Dean, Medicine and Health.
