Appointments & Achievements (5 March)

The Australian Academy of Science announces its 2025 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scientist award winners; Mitchell Gibbs (Uni Sydney) and Shannon Kilmartin-Lynch (Monash U).

Carolyn Bull is the new director of RAND Australia (“solutions to public policy challenges”). She moves from ANU’s National Security College.

Vincent Creighton is the new managing director of the (NSW) Universities Admission Centre. He moves from Academy Xi, (“short, practical and skill-specific courses … in design and innovation”).

Newly ex Commonwealth Chief Scientist Cathy Foley joins the board of Brisbane-based Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Hub.

Diane Smith-Gander is sworn in as Chancellor of Uni WA.

ANU DVC Grady Grenville exits end April, “to travel around Australia.”  There is an expression of interest process for a two-year replacement. Until that is done (end April/early May) Royston Gustavson (Academic Quality dean) will act.

Shane Huntington (consulting services in communication and strategy for over 25 years) is inaugural CEO of the Australian Society for Medical Research.

Monash U’s IT faculty appoints Shonali Krishnaswamy inaugural associate dean for innovation. She recently was chief technology officer for AIDA Technologies in Singapore and is a former professor of data science at Swinburne U.

The Feds announce new appointments to the National Research Infrastructure Advisory Group (as in helping NCRIS). Medtech entrepreneur Sue MacLeman,  Caroline McMillen (former SA Chief Scientist) and Uni Newcastle VC) and Brian Schmidt (yes that Brian Schmidt).

Alison Sheridan (Uni New England) is advisory council chair for the NSW Government Regional Development Trust. 

The Whitlam Institute (Western Sydney U) announce its 2025 research fellows, Zareh Ghazarian (Monash U) and Laura Rademaker (ANU).
