Be challenged and imagine with us

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to take up the role of Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Discipline of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Surveying within the School of Engineering at the University of Newcastle. The Discipline is highly research active, contributing substantially to the overall research inputs and outputs of the School of Engineering.

This position will provide the opportunity to work in satellite altimetry, with particular application to the marine gravity field and bathymetry, alongside Associate Professor Xiaoli Deng. The project is funded by the Australian Research Council through a grant on “Enhancing Marine Bathymetry Using New Generation Satellite Sensors”, involving collaboration with colleagues at University of Tasmania and the National Space Institute at the Technical University of Denmark. The work will develop computationally efficient techniques for constructing the marine gravity field and bathymetric model and estimating their uncertainties by using data from the new generation SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) and multi-satellite altimeter missions.

The successful candidate will work within a collaborative environment as part of an international and interdisciplinary research team.

The Role

In this role you will:

  • Develop methods and numerical modelling techniques for constructing marine gravity field and bathymetry models using data from SWOT and multi-satellite altimeter missions.
  • Assess and analyse new altimetry technology and processes, and metadata from multi-satellite altimeters.
  • Write and submit research papers arising from the research, in collaboration with the team members of the project, to high quality refereed journals, conferences and seminars.
  • Attend and present research results at national and international conferences associated with the project.

This 2-year position is full time and will be located at the Callaghan Campus (Awabakal land).

The University of Newcastle is an equal opportunity employer committed to equity, diversity and social inclusion. Women and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

How will you become part of our community?

You will have:

  • A PhD in Geodesy or Geophysics or closely related fields.
  • Advanced conceptual and numerical modelling skills in construction of marine gravity field and bathymetric models using satellite altimetry data.
  • Knowledge and ability in developing algorithms and software codes.
  • An understanding of satellite altimetry and its geodetic applications.
  • Demonstrated recent experience in writing scientific articles.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with University academic and professional staff.

How will we support you?
