Appointments and Achievements (November 2nd)

Verity Firth leaves UTS to become inaugural VP, Societal Impact, Equity & Engagement at UNSW. Bruce Watson becomes PVC, Social Inclusion there. It’s an internal appointment.

Cate Hudson becomes Dean of Programs for Uni SA’s Justice and Society disciplines group. She has been interim dean since April.

Cheryl Fullwood has been appointed Academic Registrar and Director of Student Administration, ACU, moving from Swinburne.

The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering announces its 2023 awards.

  • Technology Innovation: James Tickner (Chrysos Corporation)
  • Engineering Excellence: Conrad Wasko (Uni Melbourne)
  • David & Valerie Solomon Award: Marzi Barghamadi (CSIRO)
  • ICM Agrifood Award: Natalie Morgan (Curtin University), Benjamin Holman (NSW Department of Primary Industries)
  • Ezio Rizzardo Polymer Scholarship: Laila Halim (Monash U)

The Australian Research Council announces 2024 appointments to its College of Experts. With 99 new people there are now 319 members. A swag (48) come from Group of Eight but there is no apparent pattern to give credence to any particular conspiracy.

At Uni Sunshine Coast Alain Brunet is in-coming director of the Thompson Institute,“transforming lives through mental health research, training and treatment.” He starts next year, moving from McGill University in Canada.

TreasurerJim Chalmersannounces the Competition Taskforce Advisory Panel, including economist John Asker (UCLA) and UNSW chancellor, David Gonski.

UniSuper wins fund of the year at trade publication Super Review’s awards.

The Victorian government’s international education awards for ’23 include, RMIT – provider of the year, plus student experience and student employability. TAFE  category and partnerships and engagement award – Melbourne Polytechnic. Private provider – Institute of Health and Nursing Australia. ELT – Monash College. EdTech provider – Edalex Pty Ltd.  Graduate employer – Swisse Wellness.
