Appointments and Achievements (27 March)

Australia’s delegation to the 73rd Lindau meeting is announced (Nobel laureates and early career researchers). This year is for ECRs in physics. Barnali Das (CSIRO), Jake Horder (UTS), Emily Kerrison (Uni Sydney), Duy Nguyen (CSIRO), Grace Tabi (ANU), Mark Watson (Uni Queensland), Simon Weng (Uni Sydney) and Claire Yung (ANU).

Two invited researchers who did not make it to the 70th Lindau are also attending, W Y Sarah Lau (CSIRO) and Eugene Sachkou (La Trobe U)*

Nick Austin becomes president of the Commonwealth’sPolicy Advisory Council for International Agricultural Research. Current other roles include non-executive director of Bill and Melinda Gates Agricultural Innovations.

Jonathan Craig (Flinders U) becomes chair of the national Medical Services Advisory Committee. He is now a committee member and steps up next month. MSAC “appraises new medical services proposed for public funding.”

Teresa Finlayson becomes VP Strategy and the VC’s chief of staff at Monash U. She returns from a year at RMIT as COO.

Scott Heron (James Cook U) becomes the UNESCO Chair on Climate Change Vulnerability of Natural and Cultural Heritage. The chair is hosted by James Cook U.

Ben Hogan (Uni Melbourne) wins the Folkman Award for Outstanding Contribution from the North American Vascular Biology Organisation.

Claire Macken leaves RMIT Vietnam to become provost of multi-city education innovator Minerva University.

Opera singer singer Teddy Tahu Rhodes joins Uni Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium, “where he will play a leading role … as a teacher and mentor.

Linda Slack-Smith (UWA) receives the 2024 Geriatric Oral Health Award from the International Association of Dental Research.

The Whitlam Institute (Western Sydney U) awards research fellowships to; Tania Penovic (Deakin U) to research prison privatisation and Jeremy Walker (formerly UTS), “recover and restore the Whitlam government’s vision of responsible energy and resource policy for our time.”
