Appointments and Achievements (8 May)

George Williams moves across Sydney from his role at Deputy Vice-Chancellor Transformation, Planning and Assurance at UNSW to become Vice-Chancellor of Western Sydney University. Professor Williams succeeds Professor Barney Glover, who is heading off to be the new Jobs and Skills Commissioner.

The Australian Research Council announces the eight 2024 Industry Laureate Fellows:

  • Benjamin Boyd, Monash U (gut interaction to deliver nutrients)
  • Bruno David, (Monash U), “train a new generation of Aboriginal Sea Rangers”
  • John Gooding, (UNSW) “wearable sensors for personal wellbeing
  • Mark Halsey, (Flinders U) rehabilitation in prisons
  • David Keith, (UNSW) sustain healthy ecosystems
  • Robyn Sloggett, (Uni Melbourne) address loss of Indigenous cultural heritage
  • Guoxiu Wang,  (UTS) make batteries safer
  • Lianzhou Wang, (Uni Queensland) longer lasting and lower environmental impact batteries for EVs and electricity

Scott Bowman (Charles Darwin U VC) is the new chair of the Guangzhou International Sister-City Universities Network, “to promote educational development and cultural exchange.” He replaces now former Western Sydney U VC Barney Glover.

John Hill steps up from deputy chancellor to Uni South Australia chancellor – replacing Pauline Carr who is focusing on transition chancellor for the (to be) Adelaide University.

Mary Russell becomes CEO of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency. She has been acting since last June.

Alexis Wright (Western Sydney U) wins the Stella Prize (“celebrating Australian women’s writing”) for a second time.
