An international survey of the use of ChatGPT in writing research papers found that academic staff recommend allowing generative AI for research writing, but with strict regulation and acknowledgement.

The study collected data from 10 researchers, each from a different country and each publishing at least one article relating to AI. The team also analysed research articles relating to ChatGPT.

“An overwhelming majority of the researchers expressed concerns about how ChatGPT was already employed for plagiarism and academic fraud,” the authors noted.

The researchers interviewed identified a range of advantages in using ChatGPT – with several believing it would improve creativity and efficiency.

While some journals had implemented policies seeking to regulate use of ChatGPT, it was clear that the huge variation in policies of nations and institutions meant there was much work yet to be done to prevent plagiarism in scholarly publishing and move toward ethical and contextually-appropriate usage of AI, the authors found.
