Transformational Leadership: Creating Lasting Impact

The rise of right-wing populism globally has seen universities come under political attack, with rhetoric that universities are out of touch and elitist, and that our teaching and research aren’t connected to the real needs of communities.

In recent elections in both Canada and in Australia we have seen large majorities vote against this form of populism, and in both countries, university communities are hopeful that we will be spared the attacks on funding and academic freedom happening elsewhere.

However, there is much to learn from recent experiences of universities in Australia and overseas. Now more than ever Australian universities must remain wedded to their public purpose. To evolve our sector for a sustainable future, we need to empower systemic change that widens access, deepens engagement with our communities and delivers research with global impact and local relevance.

The kind of bold change we need is only possible if our sector unites, working towards shared outcomes. With this priority, Engagement Australia’s 2025 conference brings together an inspiring group of leaders to ask: How can universities, government, philanthropy and community work together to drive economic and social development whilst ensuring environmental sustainability?

Professor Deborah Terry AC will open the conference with a keynote address on ‘Social Licence and the Importance of Partnering with Communities’. The conference program includes presentations, deep-dives and interactive sessions with sector leaders and partners. Join us!

Verity Firth is VP Societal Impact, Equity and Engagement at UNSW.
