Clare says brace on race, TEQSA power

Jason Clare has announced an imminent report from the Race Discrimination Commissioner, which includes “some pretty awful things.”

“And it’s going take some courage and some honesty from all of us to tackle this.”

Speaking at a Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) event this week, the Education Minister also signalled the Regulator would receive new authority “in the coming months.”

“There is a good argument that TEQSA needs better tools and stronger powers to be able to step in and act when it is justified in the public interest. And to be able to respond to systemic risks, not just the compliance of individual providers,” he said.

And the minister is not for turning. “A lot of the organisations in this room say TEQSA does not need more powers. And a lot of the ones outside this room say they do.”

“This is about making the organisations you run and work in better … and building public support for what you do.”
