Appointments and Achievements (15 May)

Lara McKay is appointed Vice-President (Engagement) and Chief Marketing Officer at QUT, after six years at the University of Melbourne’s Ormond College. The appointment means a return to Queensland for Ms McKay, having served in a range of senior posts in government and HE.

Adrienne Nieuwenhuis is appointed Acting Chief Commissioner of TEQSA, following the departure of Peter Coaldrake.

The Australian Academy of Science announces the four 2024 winners of the J G Russell Award for ECRs. Mareike Dressler (UNSW – maths); Mirindi Eric Dusenge (ANU – climate change and photosynthesis);  Emily Roycroft (ANU – evolutionary biology); and Chen Zao (Uni Tasmania – Antarctic ice sheets).

Tony Birch (Uni Melbourne) wins The Age newspaper’s fiction book of the year award for his novel, Women and Children.

Zoran Bolevich is the new head of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, (the nation’s “most trusted source of health and welfare data”). He moves from NSW Health and has been a member of the AIHW since 2016.

Peter Bruckner (La Trobe U) wins VicSport’s outstanding contribution award.

CSIRO’s new deputy chair is company director Ming LongTerry Moran (Federation U chancellor) also joins CSIRO’s board.

Recent ex La Trobe U VC John Dewar wins the 2024 Asia-Pacific leadership award from the (US based) Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

Aswin Ratheesh is appointed to the James Packer Chair in Mood Disorders, at UNSW. He moves from Uni Melbourne.

Cordelia Selomulya (UNSW) becomes a Fellow of the (US) Institute of Food Technologists.
