Just three months after ChatGPT was unleashed on the world, the University of Melbourne established a university-wed project to look at ways to use the technology.
Achievements in embracing AI have led to the University of Melbourne being shortlisted in the AI University of the Year category of the 2024 Future Campus awards.
Dr Paul Barry said the AI@Melbourne project, which ran between Feb 2023 and June 2024, focused on ways to empower staff to use the new technology, following the University’s initial work in seeking to managing risks arising from generative AI.
The project identified early adopters who were experimenting with the technology and brought them into a working group, while also establishing a wider, open group for all staff interested to learn more.
The project provided the groundwork for a university-wide rollout of approaches to AI and demonstrated the importance of community-based approaches. More than 500 staff were engaged in the project’s community of practice and eith new professional development programs were established.
