Solidarity for … a select few

Just 12% of university staff are members of the National Tertiary Education Union, and it is seeking disproportionate influence over the future of the sector, according to its opposition.

University employer group the Australian Higher Education Industrial Association (AHEIA) is appears to be concerned about the prospect of the Labour Government siding more often than not with the union, issuing a media release complaining that the NTEU has too much sway.

The Association’s boss Craig Laughton appears concerned that in addition to the Labour Government giving preferential hearings to the NTEU, there is also a chance that governance reforms may make more space for the comrades in university council chambers.

“Universities welcome dialogue and input from staff as appropriate,” Mr Laughton said, leaving space for questions about exactly when staff input isn’t appropriate and how frequently they actually listen and change course in response to the input they receive.

“What is unwelcome is union moves to unsettle governance bodies through the imposition of union candidates.”

While other unions also have members in the sector, we stand by with bated breath for return salvoes from Trades Hall.

More interesting in this exchange of media releases at 10 paces is the tussle for governance. The suggestion to replace Education Ministers’ best buddies with a smattering of people who actually know how the sector works appears to have broad support, but given it is largely State and Territory Education Ministers who have to make any changes to Council composition (with the exception of ANU), it may be some time.
