Governance is “not up to scratch”: so who should run universities?

We promised you fresh content relevant to everyone in the sector, and with the collaboration of many, many people, we are delighted to continue to deliver it.

HE FEST has a unique new session, with union leader Damien Cahill and university management representative Craig Laughton agreeing to share a stage next Thursday to discuss the future of governance – ie who runs the sector and how.

Federal Higher Education Minister Jason Clare has repeatedly made it clear he is not happy with the way higher education institutions are run, declaring that governance is “not up to scratch.” At the same time, there are Federal and NSW Parliamentary inquiries ongoing into the issue and media stories most days about the way tertiary institutions are run. In this session, two of the nation's key leaders in HE industrial relations come together for a unique conversation. Who should run Australia's tertiary institutions?

To move the conversation along, Damien Cahill, General Secretary of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and Craig Laughton, Executive Director of the Australian Higher Education Industrial Association (AHEIA) have kindly agreed to join the HE FEST program next Thursday, 18 September for a constructive discussion hosted by our very own Stephen Matchett.
