The University of Western Australia has passed the final hurdle to establishing a campus in Chennai.

The University announced that on Monday that it had received final approval from India’s University Grants Commission, operating alongside the university’s Mumbai campus.

Classes will commence on 19 October, with programs in data science, AI, IT, business and economics. The Perth-based university claims more than a century of connection to India and has committed $80 million to establish its new campuses – the first foreign university to establish two campuses in India.

The West Australian Government is seeking to cultivate closer relationships with Tamil Nadu and UWA Vice-Chancellor Amit Chakma said that opening a campus in the State capital aligned with the goals of WA Premier Roger Cook.

“This is a region where we aim to leverage the WA Government’s presence as well as long-term academic partnerships,” Professor Chakma said.
