Data breach disclosure

Data relating to around 7,500 people was hacked and their private information stolen in a data breach at Western Sydney University.

The security breach was announced yesterday, just over a year after it occurred and investigations are continuing into the incident.

Western Sydney’s Microsoft Office 365 environment was breached for the first time on 17 May 2023, with hackers accessing email and SharePoint accounts, but was not identified until January this year.

“On behalf of the University, I unreservedly apologise for this incident and its impact on our community. It is deeply regrettable, and we are committed to transparently rectifying the matter and fulfilling our obligations,” Interim Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clare Pollock, said.

The University has taken out a Supreme Court injunction to prevent access and use of the stolen data. The affected people were contacted by the University yesterday to make them aware of the incident.
